MORTALITY
Elephant mortality is on the rise in Sri Lanka. according to
the dept. of wild life records, about 120-140 elephants have been killed
each year in the recent past. This is an alarming statistic, given that these are only the
officially recorded numbers, and that the estimated population
of wild elephants in Sri Lanka is only around 3,500

ELEPHANTS ELECTROCUTED BY HANGING HIGH-VOLTAGE LINES IN THE
AREAS WHERE THE TERRORIST WAR RAGES ON. THE POWER LINES
CANNOT BE REPAIRED DUE TO THE SECURITY THREAT.
NOTE THE BONES OF OTHER DEAD ELEPHANTS IN THE FOREGROUND, WHICH INDICATES THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED BEFORE.
